Getting Started

How to Scan Your First APK

Step 1: Grant Permissions

When you first launch MobInspect, you'll need to grant the following permissions:

  • Storage Access: Required to read APK files on your device
  • Notification Permission: Optional, but recommended for scan completion alerts
Android Permission Dialog

Step 2: Select an APK File

Tap the scan button on the home screen and choose how you want to select an APK:

  • Browse Files: Navigate to an APK file on your device
  • Installed Apps: Select from apps already installed on your device
  • Recent Downloads: Quick access to recently downloaded APK files

Step 3: Start the Scan

Once you've selected an APK, tap "Start Scan" to begin the analysis. The scan progress will show:

  • Current analysis stage (Permissions, Code Analysis, AI Detection)
  • Progress percentage
  • Estimated time remaining

Step 4: Review Results

After the scan completes, you'll see a comprehensive security report including:

  • Risk Score: Overall security rating from 0-100
  • Threat Summary: Any detected malware or suspicious behaviors
  • Permission Analysis: Breakdown of app permissions and their risks
  • AI Detection Results: Scores from all three detection layers
  • Recommendations: Actionable suggestions based on findings

Understanding Scan Results

Risk Score Interpretation

  • 0-30 (Low Risk): App appears safe. No significant threats detected.
  • 31-60 (Medium Risk): Some concerns found. Review the detailed findings.
  • 61-80 (High Risk): Significant issues detected. Exercise caution.
  • 81-100 (Critical Risk): Severe threats found. Do not install this app.

AI Detection Layers

Our 3-layer detection system provides individual scores:

  • Machine Learning (ML) Score: Pattern-based detection using trained neural networks
  • Rule-Based Score: Matches against known malware signatures and patterns
  • Heuristic Score: Behavioral analysis for unknown/zero-day threats

Permission Risk Levels

  • Safe: Standard permissions with minimal privacy impact
  • Moderate: Permissions that could affect privacy if misused
  • Dangerous: High-risk permissions that require careful consideration

Managing Scan Reports

Saving Reports

After a scan completes, you can save the report for future reference:

  • Tap the "Save Report" button on the results screen
  • Reports are stored locally on your device
  • Access saved reports from the "Reports" tab in the app

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

MobInspect is an advanced mobile security application that uses AI-powered technology to scan Android APK files for malware, vulnerabilities, and privacy threats. Our 3-layer detection engine combines Machine Learning, Rule-Based Analysis, and Heuristic Scanning to provide comprehensive security analysis.

Yes! MobInspect is completely free to download and use. All core scanning features are available at no cost. We may introduce premium features in the future, but the essential security scanning will always remain free.

No, MobInspect works completely offline. All AI models and scanning algorithms run locally on your device. This means your APK files and scan data never leave your phone, ensuring maximum privacy and security.

MobInspect supports Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and above. For the best experience, we recommend Android 10 or later. Some features may be limited on older Android versions due to system restrictions.

We're currently developing an iOS version of MobInspect. Due to iOS security restrictions, the feature set will be different from the Android version. Follow us on social media for updates on the iOS release.

Scanning Questions

Scan times vary depending on the APK file size and your device's processing power. Most scans complete within 10-60 seconds. Larger apps (over 100MB) may take 1-2 minutes. The scan runs in the background, so you can use other apps while waiting.

Yes! MobInspect can scan both APK files and apps already installed on your device. Simply select "Installed Apps" when starting a scan, and choose the app you want to analyze from the list.

Machine Learning Layer: Uses neural networks trained on millions of malware samples to identify complex patterns and behaviors that traditional methods might miss.

Rule-Based Layer: Compares the APK against a database of known malware signatures, suspicious code patterns, and blacklisted behaviors.

Heuristic Layer: Analyzes app behavior to detect unknown threats (zero-day) by identifying suspicious activities that deviate from normal app behavior.

Yes! MobInspect uses a foreground service to continue scanning even when the app is minimized or your screen is off. You'll see a persistent notification showing scan progress, and you'll be notified when the scan is complete.

Apps can be flagged for various reasons:

  • Known Malware: The app matches known malware signatures
  • Suspicious Permissions: Requesting dangerous permissions without clear justification
  • Code Obfuscation: Excessive code hiding techniques often used by malware
  • Network Behavior: Suspicious network communication patterns
  • False Positive: Sometimes legitimate apps trigger warnings. Review the detailed findings to understand why.

Always review the detailed scan report to understand specific concerns before making a decision.

Privacy & Security

Absolutely. MobInspect is designed with privacy as a core principle:

  • All scanning happens locally on your device
  • APK files are never uploaded to any server
  • Scan results are stored only on your device
  • We don't collect personal information
  • No account or registration required

Storage permission is required to read APK files from your device's storage. Without this permission, MobInspect cannot access the files you want to scan. We only read the specific files you select and never access other files on your device.

We collect minimal, anonymized usage analytics to help improve the app. This includes:

  • App crashes and errors (to fix bugs)
  • Feature usage statistics (to improve the UI)
  • Device type and OS version (for compatibility)

You can disable analytics in the app settings. We never collect information about the apps you scan.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues & Solutions

Scan Stuck or Not Starting

Symptoms: The scan progress bar doesn't move or the scan fails to start.

Solutions:

  • Ensure storage permission is granted in device settings
  • Try restarting the app
  • Check if the APK file is corrupted (try a different file)
  • Clear app cache: Settings → Apps → MobInspect → Clear Cache
  • Ensure your device has at least 500MB free storage

App Crashes During Scan

Symptoms: The app closes unexpectedly during scanning.

Solutions:

  • Update to the latest version of MobInspect
  • Close other apps to free up memory
  • Restart your device
  • Try scanning a smaller APK file first
  • Report the issue via Contact Us with the APK name

Notification Not Showing

Symptoms: You don't receive scan completion notifications.

Solutions:

  • Check notification permission: Settings → Apps → MobInspect → Notifications
  • Ensure notifications are not blocked by Do Not Disturb mode
  • Check that battery optimization isn't killing background processes
  • Enable "Show notifications" in MobInspect settings

Storage Permission Denied

Symptoms: Cannot select files or "Permission denied" error.

Solutions:

  • Go to device Settings → Apps → MobInspect → Permissions
  • Enable Storage/Files permission
  • On Android 11+, you may need to grant "All files access"
  • Restart the app after granting permissions

High Battery Usage

Symptoms: Battery drains quickly when using MobInspect.

Solutions:

  • This is normal during active scans (AI processing is CPU-intensive)
  • Battery usage should return to normal after scan completion
  • Disable background scanning if you don't need it
  • Enable battery saver mode on your device

False Positives

Symptoms: A legitimate app is flagged as malware.

Solutions:

  • Review the detailed findings to understand the specific concerns
  • Check if the app is from a trusted source (official app store)
  • Report false positives to us via Contact Us so we can improve detection
  • Consider the app's reputation and reviews from other users
